Technology before Health and Safety

In this age of scrupulously analyzing the number of kilos of carbon we emit into the atmosphere, machines no longer appear as gigantic powerful and dangerous machines. Even the great power dams hide any explicit appearance of the monstrous, of the power, to a dull rumbling. The trend is towards ever greater health and safety, which obscures one aspect of the essence of technology – the violent triumph of calculation over the bulk. With so much hidden, it is sometimes necessary to visit museums where the gigantics of the past serve as still, clean and quiet reminders of the artful majesty with which past man ruled over the earth.
