Concerning Peta

Concerning the current standard claim that Peta’s recent add is “tasteless” because it “exploits” the victims of a tragedy:

If Peta was right, which is to say, if the violence done to animals on a daily basis was something we should be outraged about, then they are absolutely right to capitalize on whatever possible to try to get their message out. This idea that they are “exploiting” the incident becomes nonsensical if you believe their position – just as it would be nonsensical to accuse a human rights organization for being insensitive to the feelings of proud Chinese people for pointing out human rights violations during the media exposure of the olympics.

The idea that organizations/people should act as if they must take the possible untruth of their own position into account when judging the sensitivity of an act is insane. If Peta is insensitive by this bus add, it is because their position just happens to be false, and they should be confronted with an argument against their position itself, not on this ridiculous sensitivity argument.

I disagree. We often need to take into account the possibility of our own errors, especially when major moral questions are at stake. We need to recognize that we are fallible beings and might be incorrect.

In any case, I think most people are simply asserting that PETAs campaign will harm them tactically by making people feel less positively towards them as an organization. It is relatively hard to imagine it actually encouraging the ethical treatment of animals.
