Silwan is a Palestinian community which finds itself in the centre of the Palestinian-Zionist conflict. Settlers take over houses by forging deeds, or getting Israeli courts to rule in favour of Palestinian eviction on the basis of the absentee property law. Sometimes settlers even by occupying houses by use of armed force – people who live there can never leave their homes empty, or they run a real risk that when they get home the house will be occupied by settlers. Unlike the refugee camps, Palestinians are proud of Silwan – this is not a transient space they reside in while waiting to return to their homes, these are their homes, and they will endure hardship hardly imaginable to us to remain in them, to rebuild them when they are demolished, and to peacefully resist against the armed settler colonization of their community.
